Konsumentverket criticises Swedish online gambling operators

Consumer affairs agency Konsumentverket has criticised several different iGaming operators in Sweden for having unclear terms and conditions on their websites. They have also issued a formal warning to the perpetrators.

Deficiencies in the terms and conditions

Last week, Konsumentverket announced that they had conducted a review of 13 different licenced online casino and betting operators across the country. These were chosen at random. The consumer affairs agency found that every single one of the operators had deficiencies in their terms and conditions.

These deficiencies were related to withdrawal restrictions, liability disclaimers, ID and verification requirements, inconsistent terms of play and unclear promotions. Konsumentverket stated this inadequate amount of information meant that operators weren’t “providing balanced and fair conditions to consumers.”

Immediate intervention is required

Konsumentverket revealed that 11 of the 13 iGaming operators had used contract terms on their customer registration page without stipulating what documentation players needed to provide in order to be verified. Furthermore, 6 of the operators had contract terms which impeded upon the customers’ right to withdraw their money from their account.

After uncovering this information, Konsumentverket told the Swedish operators to immediately review and update their terms and conditions. They added: “The Swedish Consumer Agency intends to follow up the current review to see how the gaming companies have taken into account the assessments made in the current memorandum. Such a follow-up may take place in the form of individual supervisory matters.”
