Industry poised for “biggest ever” Responsible Gambling Week

The industry will unite at the start of next month, with the sophomore edition of Responsible Gambling Week (RGW) pledging to spark “the biggest ever national conversation” with customers.

That is the view of John Hagan, Chairman of the Industry Group for Responsible Gambling (IGRG) and Partner at City of London law firm Harris Hagan.

“The event is in its second year and this year it is taking place across the United Kingdom and also in Ireland so it will be bigger, with a greater reach,” he explained.

“The purpose is to create a conversation with customers, their friends, families and the wider public about what it means to gamble responsibly and where help and support can be found, if it is required.

“The industry is fully supporting the event and each of the five sectors has pledged support through their trade associations. They have all made commitments to ensure we raise awareness of the week. Anyone who gambles during Responsible Gambling Week, whether online or in a physical venue, should know about the event.”

Taking place on the 1-7 November, this year’s RGW will take encouragement from the success of the last year’s inaugural event, which encompassed more than 10,000 gambling venues and online sites, 120,000 employees across the UK and created more than 10 million impressions on social media.

In Ireland, the initiative will be supported by more than 800 bookmakers shops and head offices, involving around 5500 staff, and by the Arcades Association, the Gaming and Leisure Association of Ireland, Horse Racing Ireland and both the Irish Greyhound and Horse Racing Tote.

“The week will be success if we see operators from all sectors, going above and beyond the minimum commitments they have signed up to, throwing their collective weight behind the week, raising awareness amongst customers and sparking a big conversation,” Hagan added.

“The industry is often given a hard time in the media, but I know there is a lot of good work going on behind the scenes and this week is an opportunity for operators to have a positive conversation with customers, their families and their friends about how to gamble responsibly.”
